Ships Licence
Apply here 'on line' for your Ships Licence.
Article S47 of the international Radio Regulations states that: The service of every ship radiotelephone station, ship earth station and ship station shall be controlled by an operator holding a certificate issued or recognised by the government to which the station is subject. Provided the station is so controlled, other persons besides the holder of the certificate may use the equipment. This means that maritime radio equipment available for use on board a vessel that is owned by a UK citizen or UK registered must be: Covered by a valid ship radio licence or transportable marine radio licence issued in the United Kingdom by the Radiocommunications Agency; Operated by or under the direct personal supervision of a holder of a valid Maritime radio operator's certificate; Compliant with the requirements of either the Marine Equipment Directive (MED), the Radio & Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive or Nationally Type approved.
In simple terms; ship/boat needs a licence ........somebody on board should have a Maritime Certificate .... but in an emergency, the radio will still work.
Stay legal and apply for one.
The licence is now FREE if you apply on line, but if you print out an application form, fill it in and send it off, Ofcom charge you £20 for the licence.
CB or Citizens' Band Radio Licence
As from 1st January 1999 it has been illegal to use 934MHz CB equipment in the UK. The UK only service which operates between 27.60125 and 27.99125 MHz and the CEPT service which operates between 26.965 and 27.405 MHz will both remain legal.
You do not need a licence to operate a CB radio within the UK any longer.
PMR446 Handportables
PMR446 Handportable Equipment do not require a licence.
Basestations or Vehicle Mounted Mobiles are not allowed on these channels.
