Applying for a Radio Licence

All radios except for PMR446 handportables need an Ofcom Licence unless you hire the equipment from us.

Everything from aerials to 24volt converters, mike holders and fuse holders.

Digital Radios

Why digital?

Digital is the future. Ofcom expects 70% of PMR usage to be digital by 2020. Allowing us to move forward in the digital age.
Digital radios contain better improved facilites such as longer battery life, reduced external background noise, stronger & clearer signals, the extra feature of text messaging and many more.

If you require any extra information please contact us on 01273 476456 and our radio engineers will be happy to answer any further questions.

Vehicle Mounted Mobiles

Vehicle mounted mobiles transmit up to 5 times the power of a handportable and with a larger roof mounted aerial, you are always better off using these instead of handportables when good range is required. Working from a basestation, mobiles can have the range of between 5 and 30 miles, range being mainly dependent on the siting of the basestation, 5 miles for a poor location, 30 when the basestation is high up on a hill with the aerial on a tower, clear of any obstructions.
Mobiles can also be used without a basestation and range is dependent on what obstructions are in between the two vehicles. Normally you can only work around a town, ideal if you are just starting up a taxi firm, but 4 - 5 miles is about the limit unless one mobile happens to be up high.

We hire out mobiles from £2.95 per week + vat and we can supply them on a channel, ready to go. Email us with your requirements.

These radios need an Ofcom licence which we can organise for you. If you hire the equipment, you can operate on one of our hire channels for the first 12 months. Email us for details.

Commercial Handportables

These handportables can be integrated into a system using vehicle mounted mobiles and basestations if required. They operate with up to 10 times the power of the 'licence exempt PMR446' handportables which cannot be used with vehicle and basestation equipment. They are for business use only and have to have an Ofcom Licence which we can organise for you.
Handportables can be used in a number of different modes, simple press to talk with everybody hearing everything to multichannel, telephone answering, selective calling of individual units and built in GPS position indicators.
Range without a basestation is 2 miles in open country, half a mile in towns but with a basestation it increases to between 3 and 15 miles dependent on the base location.

Basestations

Basestations are used to either provide a fixed point, such as an office, to contact the vehicle mounted mobiles and handportables from or they can in addition provide mobile to mobile or handportable to handportable communications.

The standard basestation gives office to vehicle mounted mobile and handportable contact.
The repeater basestation can also provide the set to set contact.

Licence Free PMR 446 Radios

These handportables operate on low power, licence exempt, EEC channels and although aimed at the domestic market, they can be used for short range business use. You cannot use these with a basestation or vehicle mobiles. Although manufacturers are very optimistic about range, in real terms these go about a mile outside, a great less if one is inside a building.
